Is it possible to add optgroup labels to the categories list?

I'm going to have a variety of categories in my dropdown category list and would like to use the optgroup tag to split the categories into groups. I could of course just create the groups as the top level categories, then put the categories under those, but that would require clicking on a group to go to the next page showing those categories. Is it possible to add optgroup labels to the categories list somehow?

You can use the form_draw_select_optgroup_field() function to generate an optgroup field.
