Attributes, what's their purpose?

So I'm guessing attributes have some power over which "Similar products" are listed?
But what else is the attributes field useful for?

This is something you see in most ecommerce platforms. We use it for category filters, and addons can expand use of them. In 3.0 they can also substitute technical data.
