tonny Curtain Guru Från Netherlands Medlem sedan dec. 2016 tonny 21 feb. 2020 09:07 Hi Michaelmo, I made a setup for Tim regarding the how to: install Tim is not convinced about the documentation, so I thought let see who respons on this on the forum. But it seems that everyone already knows all... I think for LiteCart it is needed otherwise you can only serve the ict educated ones like yourself And for growing you need new customers...and they need help (from you) or documentation And they will buy the needed addons. So It would be nice if all addon sellers also reach out in writing a how to. It would bennefit all at the end. Would you take care of a single how to?
s22_tech Moderator Från United States Medlem sedan okt. 2019 s22_tech 21 feb. 2020 20:29 Hi Tonny, I like your idea, however at this point I think it would be a lot of effort for very little return. Here's my reasoning. Your question insinuates that Tim would be the one to write, or at the very least proof-read and correct, the how-to articles. This, I'm afraid, would place a lot of undue stress on him, which I'm sure he doesn't need. A better suggestion, imho, would be to put more "point of contact" explanations where they're needed - like in Settings when you click the pencil icon, an explanation is shown. More in-depth explanations like those would go much further than documentation. That being said, I do think that LiteCart would benefit greatly from more technical documentation to help us program for LiteCart. The more people that understand the framework and are able to program for it, the more add-ons there will be, the more help Tim would have in the forum and, by extension, the more time he would have to devote to taking LiteCart forward instead of spending time answering the same types of questions over and over. This would grow the community in a more sustainable way. The wiki is a good start, but it needs to grow. This is not a project that one man can handle by himself if it becomes more popular. It needs to have knowledgable people to be able to help out. I, for one, would love to do more - but I need to understand it better. More in-depth wiki content would really help. Also, adding copious amounts of comments to the code would go a long way to helping us understand what's going on under-the-hood. Sometimes just looking at the code isn't enough - there needs to be an explanation of what it's doing or why it's being done the way that it is. You're correct in saying that add-on developers need to document their modules and code better. Some of the explanations I've read left me scratching my head wondering what the add-on even does. So my vote is for more technical wiki content and comments in the code. Marc

user6852 Scriptkiddie Från France Medlem sedan juli 2019 user6852 21 feb. 2020 21:46 But to be clear: are you all talking about a guide "how to use litecart" or "how litecart's code works" ? In any case, I don't remember who really cared about reading any "old" attempt to document "how OSC or (Prestashop) works".. I think it's lost time since softwares are constantly changing there functionalitiee. But two things could be improved: 1) More GUI dialogs. 2) More comments in the code. In addition I don't thing litecart's back-office is hard to understand. Maybe it would need: 1) a more complete setup wizard which will help step by step to finalize the basic configurations like currencies, taxes, zones, shipping modules... 2) one frustrating point is to face an empty field that we expected to be filled and we don't know where and how. For example: you want to create a new product but you face empty options/attributes. Thus for any empty field, a pop-up tip including a text and a link to the correct admin page could be welcome.

Don't think that only developers like you are using Litecart. There are also people like me who understand nothing about the code and who only use their simple dashboard which restricts everything else. Of course, I have a French freelancer who I pay when I am stuck and who works very well for me. But anything I could do alone would be a boon to me. Regarding addons, it's a disaster even with the "read me". If I knew how to install them alone, I would buy more. Everything I just wrote is not a "bad review" of Litecart which I love. Litecart is necessarily complicated for the non-developers that I am, I agree. So, if I can get a better explanation of the beast, I sign Mr. Tonny right away.

a lot of effort for very little return: All good running e-commerse have them and the only thing they did wrong is spent to many words so the reader can not overview it all. It has to be in small steps. All ict educated have no problem understanding and they can not understand why beginners do not understand. Change this and where off Remember more popular means more explanation and this could be done by documentation! Tim would be the one to write: Tim is not the only one writing. I already did some and together we can do it. When you lauch a addon you should do some writing.
